I think that it depends more on your presentation than on your monitor.
I remember having that same annoyance with powerpoint.
My only advise to you is to try and resize your slides to have the same ratio dimentions as your monitor.
I doubt it is worth the trouble, though.
First off, it is playing in Full Screen. Those black bars are there because you created a PP show that is square (4:3 aspect ratio is SQUARE or Full Screen) and you are playing it on a rectangular screen( 16:9 is RECTANGULAR or Wide Screen).
It’s either keep the original show intact (square) and put black bars on the sides to fill up the space, or stretch it out and distort the image to play it widescreen (rectangular).
So either keep your presentation intact and display it Full Screen with black bars so you don’t get distorted text/images, change your Display Settings (on the video card – nothing to do with PP) and get rid of “maintain aspect ratio” which will stretch and distort, or change the page layout of your PP show.
If you change your page layout (File -> Page setup…) then use 8″ X 4.5″.

The technical term is that you need to change the aspect ratio of the display for the screen.
To do this you use File > Page Setup. Create a custom paper size that is the same ratio of height to width as your screen.
Then your presentation will fill the screen completely. Make the change before creating the presentation. Presentation will appear stretched if you create it firs then change the paper size.

Don’t change the aspect ratio if you are going to be presenting presentations elsewhere (school, work, etc.) It will cause you a lot of trouble.
